Recommender System Transparency Notice
Recommender System Transparency Notice
Effective Date: October 27, 2026
This notice explains how we decide which profiles to show you, how we decide which users see your profile, and what you can do to influence both. Section 7.5(e) of our Terms of Service refers to this notice. Unless defined here, capitalized terms have the meanings given in the Terms, and "Sensitive data" has the meaning given in our Privacy Policy. We update this notice when our recommendation features change, and we will add more detail about individual features as we introduce them.
1. The grid is ordered by distance. By default, the main view of the App, often called the "grid" or "cascade," shows nearby profiles ordered primarily by how close they are to your current location. That ordering does not use a recommender system. Every user has it, at no charge, and you can return to it at any time from the main screen of the App. Separately from that ordering, the grid may also include recommended profiles, which are described in Section 2.
2. Features that recommend profiles. Some features suggest profiles you may be interested in, and suggest your profile to others, based on more than distance alone. These features use AI Technology. They include rows of recommended profiles within the grid and separate features that suggest, rank, or summarize profiles. Some are free and some are Paid Features. In some, you can view recommended profiles at no charge but need a Paid Feature to message them (see Section 9 of the Terms). Which of these features you can use depends on your subscription, your settings, and where you are. Each feature is identified where it appears in the App, and our Help Center describes the features currently available.
3. The main parameters we use. Our recommender systems rely on four kinds of information.
Profile information you provide. Your Display Name, Profile Pictures, About Me, Age, Height, Weight, Body Type, Looking For, Tribes, Position, and Tags.
How you use the Services. Your taps, favorites, who you message, the statuses you set, what media you share, who you interact with, whether and how quickly you reply, whether you are online or were recently active, and whether you have turned on a feature that shows other users you are available now.
Where you are. How far you are from the other user.
Conversations with others. A summary of your personality and interests derived from conversations.
From this information our systems may make predictions, such as how likely two users are to be a good match for each other or how likely one user is to reply to another. Those predictions are System-Generated Content (see Section 5).
Grindr does not use HIV status, Last Tested Date, Testing Reminders, the "Poz" tribe and tag, or vaccination status in AI Technology, including recommendations, whatever your settings.
4. Why these parameters matter. We use these kinds of information because they are the most helpful in improving the quality of a user's matches. They describe how users present themselves, what they are looking for, and whether they are available. The systems compare them across profiles to find similarities and complementary preferences. For example, if you state a preference in your profile, the systems may give more weight to profiles of users who have stated a similar or complementary preference, and to profiles like those you have tapped, favorited, or messaged. For features built around meeting soon, distance and recent activity carry more weight, so a profile that is far away or has not been active recently is less likely to be recommended even if it is otherwise a good match. Recommendations refresh often, so the profiles you see change as people nearby come online. If your profile contains little information, the systems have fewer parameters to work with and the results will be less tailored to you and what you want, and to who wants you too.
5. Recommendations run in both directions. The same systems decide whether and when your profile is suggested to other users. Some features consider whether you may be another user's type as well as whether they may be yours, so your profile is more likely to be suggested to users you are also likely to be interested in, and more likely to be suggested when you are nearby and online or recently active. The systems may also generate System-Generated Content about you, such as inferences and insights drawn from your profile and your activity, and show it to users of those features even if you do not use the features yourself. System-Generated Content is generated automatically and may be inaccurate. Section 7.5 of the Terms describes this, and Section 6 below describes your controls.
6. Your options. You can influence the recommendations you see, and how your profile is recommended to others, in these ways.
Use the grid. The distance-based ordering described in Section 1 is always available and does not use a recommender system.
Edit your profile. You can change the information in Section 3 at any time in Edit Profile. Changes affect both the profiles recommended to you and how your profile is recommended to others.
Manage your AI settings. Your privacy settings let you control whether your Sensitive data and chat content are used in AI features, including recommendations. When you turn that use off, we stop using that data for those purposes, your profile is not recommended to other users by features that depend on that data, and features that depend on the setting stop working for you until you turn it back on. Where a row of recommended profiles still appears, it is not personalized to you. We apply a change to this setting as soon as we can, but it can take up to 24 hours for all of our systems to reflect it. Sections 7.5(d) and 9.13 of the Terms explain what this means for Paid Features. A separate setting controls whether your Sensitive data and chat content are used to improve and develop AI Technology; it does not change the recommendations you see.
Object to our use of your other information. For information that is not Sensitive data, you can object through the form linked in our Privacy Policy and in your Settings. If you object, we stop using your non-Sensitive information for AI features, including recommendations, and for AI training.
Block or report. You can block or report any profile, including a recommended one. Blocked profiles are not recommended to you, and your profile is not recommended to users who have blocked you.
Correct or delete information about you. You can ask us to correct or delete inferences, insights, and other information we have generated about you. Our Privacy Policy explains how. Deleted information is not used in future recommendations.
7. Where to find these settings. Open the App and go to Settings > Privacy. The settings in Section 6 appear under "Sensitive Data." Our Help Center has step-by-step instructions.
